Gene Menez

Menez joined SI in 1998 and has distinguished himself on a number of beats. He has covered golf, college football, fantasy football and college basketball. He currently edits and writes for Sports Illustrated Presents, the commemorative division of SI.

Prior to arriving at SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, Menez worked as a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered University of North Texas, high school and professional sports, and the Colonial and Byron Nelson golf tournaments. He also worked as a reporting intern at the Oakland (Mich.) Press and Albany (Ore.) Democrat-Herald.

Menez served as a researcher for the film Glory Road (2006) and two books: The Battle for Augusta National, written by SI's Alan Shipnuck and Fanatic, by SI's Jim Gorant. "My favorite SI story to work on, and this is pretty random, was a 2001 feature on the golf course in Oklahoma that was set to host the U.S. Open later that year, Southern Hills in Tulsa," says Menez. "The course had been vandalized years earlier by a former employee at the club, but our story did not quote the employee because our writer couldn't locate him and neither could the police. It's my favorite story because, in the process of fact-checking the story, I found him. We ended up changing the story because of it, and the guy ended up being arrested."

Menez was born in the Philippines and lived there until his family moved to Massachusetts prior to his second birthday. After six years in the Boston area, his family settled in Texas. He currently resides in Manhattan.
